Ven. Lama Sonam Gyurmey became a Buddhist monk at the age of 10 and studied Tibetan language and Buddhist ritual practice for 8 years at Bhenchen Monastery, Swoyambhu, in Kathmandu in Nepal.
At the age of 18 he received the Sharmana and fully ordained vow (Bikshu) from H.E. Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche, V.V. Tenga Rinpoche and V.V. Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche.
In brief, he received all three vows of Pratimoksha, the Bodhisattva and Mantrayana from various high Karma Kagyu masters.
Beside these he also completed the three years retreat at Bokar Nyedon Choekhorling monastery in Mirik, Darjeeling where he received many initiations, reading transmissions and all Buddhist instructions.
As of November 2017, Lama Sonam Gyurmey is the new chair of the Drupngi khding Ling foundation.
